Hi. My name is Ahmad Collins. I’m a proud husband, father, grandfather, and I’ve always enjoyed a very active lifestyle — playing basketball, going fishing, and DJing at events. But since last December I haven’t been able to do many things because my kidneys failed and I’m in urgent need of a transplant.
I’ve been taking medication for high blood pressure since I was 18. While what caused it is unclear, it has gradually impacted my kidney function over time. Nevertheless, I’ve had a blessed life. I married my best friend, had two wonderful children, played in the NFL, and went on to work as a football coach and counselor for struggling kids. Today, I work for City Government as the Assistant Chief Equity & Compliance officer, helping local businesses.
However, in December of 2023 I had a minor heart attack . That trauma and the side effects of the contrast dye to image my arteries destroyed my kidneys.
Since then, I’ve had to do dialysis for 10 hours every day to live. While it’s keeping me alive, it has taken a huge toll on my body. I’m constantly fatigued and it causes bad cramps that would make any football player wince. Dialysis is not a long-term solution, and the longer I’m on it, the more my health will decline.
While I’m doing the best I can to take care of myself, I need a kidney transplant. A living kidney donor could give me the gift of life — and it’s a gift that can be given safely. Years ago, my wife donated one of her kidneys to her older brother and they are both doing great.
I want to continue to be there for her, my children, watch my grandkids grow up, and be a positive force in my community.
I never imagined that I would ever need to ask anyone to consider such a selfless and heroic act. But it would save my life. I would be so grateful if you could share my story. Thank you.
