What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

Learn more about living donation here.
Hi. My name is Raymond Rice. I’m a husband, proud father, and my passion has always been playing the drums. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play them in the last few years because I’m in kidney failure and in urgent need of a transplant.
I come from a family that is genetically predisposed to diabetes. While I’ve done my best to control it, I caught covid in March 2020, and it destroyed my kidneys. My life was completely turned upside-down and I’ve been on dialysis for four years.
I do dialysis three days a week to stay alive. It's extremely taxing on my body, often leaving me exhausted, weak, and nauseous. And by the time I feel a little better, I'm heading back to dialysis and the cycle starts all over again.
Though life has been hard, I’m doing my best to take care of my physical and mental health. My faith has kept me grounded, and I've received steadfast support from my wife, children, and my employer, the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, where I’m an audio engineer. They have not only been compassionate but have been supportive in my search for a living donor.
A kidney from a living donor would give me strength, energy and clarity. I miss playing basketball with my son and just spending time with my family and friends; and yes, I miss playing the drums.
A living donor would save my life. I know donating a kidney is not a small ask. I would be so grateful if you shared my story. Thank you.
