What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

Hi. My name is Earl Phelan. I’m a husband, proud father, and up until recently, I’ve had the privilege of working as a caretaker for our veterans. Because I believe there comes a time when all of us need a helping hand. Unfortunately, that time has come for me a lot earlier than I would have ever imagined. I'm making this video because I’m sick and in urgent need of a kidney transplant.
I have a kidney disease called IgA Nephropathy. Researchers don't know what causes it, but it usually progresses slowly. So slow that I didn’t know I had it until about two years ago. Before then I was able to focus on things that mattered, most importantly my two boys. To attend their games, go fishing, roller skating, make them laugh. To be present in a way that I didn’t have growing up.
My own father was paralyzed when I was four, and I lost my mom when I was a teenager. When I think about that and my current situation, it honestly scares me. Even though my kids are young, they know what’s going on. I do dialysis five times a week to stay alive. I'm constantly weak, get painful cramps, swelling in my legs, and nausea and vomiting, which makes it hard to eat.
A kidney from a living donor would literally save my life. It would allow me to go back to work, be a supportive husband, active dad, make them laugh, and just feel normal.
I know that donating a kidney isn’t a small ask, but I’d be so grateful if you shared my story. Thank you.
I would be grateful if you shared this page.
