What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

Learn more about living donation here

My name is Ron. I’m 60 years old, I am in urgent need of a kidney transplant. Right now my life revolves around home dialysis five nights a week, about 4 to 5 hours each time. It takes a lot out of me. Most days I feel worn down, and it really limits how I live.

I was born with only one working kidney, and by 2012 that kidney began to fail, leading me to dialysis. In 2014, I was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant, my sister donated through a paired exchange, and that gift meant everything to me. But after getting COVID in 2019, my transplanted kidney was damaged. Then in 2022, I became critically ill with Legionnaires’ disease and spent three weeks in a coma, 75 days in the hospital. My kidney failed again, and I had to return to dialysis.

Going through this a second time has been very hard.

A kidney from a living donor would truly change my life. It would give me more freedom, more energy, and the chance to spend real, meaningful time with my family instead of just getting through each day.

I’m hoping someone might consider helping me have that chance again.

I would be grateful if you shared this page.
