What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

My name is Jill, and I still can’t believe that for the second time in my life I am searching for a kidney while on dialysis.

My story began when I was young and diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes. Diabetes was not kind to me. After nearly 20 years of the disease wearing down my body, I developed neuropathy and retinopathy, and I lost my kidneys.

In 2012, I was blessed with the selfless gift of a kidney and pancreas transplant. My life was forever changed. I live my life as fully as possible to honor my donor’s memory and the incredible generosity of her family every single day.

Ten years later, my kidney began to decline. Now, I am once again listed for a kidney transplant. I do peritoneal dialysis at home every night for eight hours. My diet and fluid intake are limited, but I stay positive and as active as I can. I eat well and follow all of my doctors’ instructions—even though there are many—because I want to be in the best shape possible when the time comes to receive another gift of life.

Everyone tells me that a living donor kidney would give me the best chance for a longer, healthier life. On their advice, here I am, sharing my story and hoping someone might be willing to help.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. Please consider sharing my page or learning more about living kidney donation.

I would be grateful if you shared this page.
