What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

Learn more about living donation here

My name is Dave Lackner. I'm 64, a lifelong Mt. Lebanon resident, and I'm searching for a living kidney donor. I've spent my whole life building things that last.

A 39-year marriage to my college sweetheart Sue. Two kids who've given me five grandchildren. A 1968 Camaro I rebuilt from the frame up in my Mt. Lebanon garage. And a 40- year career helping businesses across Pittsburgh find the right packaging solutions.
Now I need help building something I can't do alone: more time with the people I love.

At 64, I'm facing kidney failure. I'm on the transplant waiting list, but the average wait is 5+ years — time I'd rather spend chasing my grandkids around the backyard, not sitting in a dialysis chair.

I know firsthand what a kidney transplant can do. My father received one at age 80, and it gave him 11 more years — years he spent watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow up. I want that same chance.

Living kidney donation is safe, and donors often say it's the most meaningful thing they've ever done. You don't need to know me personally. You don't even need to be a direct match — paired donation programs can help even if you're not compatible.

If you're reading this, you might be the person who can give me more time with the people I love.

I would be grateful if you shared this page.
