What It's Like To Donate a Kidney

Hi, my name is Fernando Moreno. I’m a husband, a father, and I’m a passionate truck driver. Few things give me a sense of freedom and accomplishment like work does. But unfortunately, I haven’t been able to work in two years because I’m sick and in urgent need of a kidney transplant.

When I was seven years old I was hospitalized for high blood pressure. It’s something that runs in my family. I wasn't put on medication or told it was destroying my kidneys until later in life. By then, all I could do was slow its progression until 2023 when I had to start dialysis.

I do dialysis three times a week to stay alive, and it has completely changed everything. I used to be an active father and husband who enjoyed doing stuff with the people I love. Fishing, bowling, working on cars. Now I can’t, and it’s not because I don’t want to, but because I don’t have energy to do it. Dialysis leaves me weak, exhausted, in pain, and by the time I feel better, I have to go back to dialysis and the cycle repeats.

Even though life has been hard, I’m doing my best to take care of myself. I’m eating healthy, my family support team is strong, and I bought my own truck, which I’m more determined than ever to drive.

The gift of life from a living kidney donor would give me the health to work again, to be there for my family, and just feel normal. I know that donating a kidney is no small ask, but it would save my life. I would be so grateful if you shared my story. Thank you.

I would be grateful if you shared this page.
